Carla Interviews Amy Jo Fleming about ‘Death at Bandit Creek’

Hi, I’m Carla Roma and welcome to Bandit Creek, a small town with a mountain of secrets. The fall is one of my favorite times of year. The beautiful colors of the leaves, the first snow, getting ready for Thanksgiving — it all brings back memories of Thanksgiving that we have shared with our own families. Like that first day of school, the fall also brings the promise of new starts. I have been delighted to read DEATH AT BANDIT CREEK. It’s clear from the title that this book is a mystery story, but, it’s also a story of redemption and new beginnings. Today, it is my pleasure to interview Amy Jo Fleming about her book, DEATH AT BANDIT CREEK, the fifth book in the Bandit Creek series.

Carla: As a writer, I imagine that one of the first questions anyone asks you is where do you get your ideas?

AJF: I come from a family of storytellers and teachers. The stories of the young women who went west and taught in one-room schoolhouses are stories of courage and adventure. I wanted to capture the traits in my heroine that would make her willing to dare this great endeavor. I wanted to write about these young women who ventured out alone, to teach the children of our settlers and acknowledge the important role they played.

Carla: How do you commemorate those early schoolteachers?

AJF: It was important to see Charlotte, my heroine, feeling lonely and unsure at the beginning of the book. Then we see her confidence grow when she makes a success of her job as a teacher. One of my favorite parts of the book is when she puts on the annual Thanksgiving Pageant. It was a chance to show her with her students, teaching them and encouraging them to be successful.

Carla: When we first meet Charlotte, she is waiting in a train station. It really brings to mind another great story where the heroine is first seen at the train station.

AJF: Okay, I’m busted. Anne of Green Gables is my favorite book ever. I did want Charlotte to have a lot of the same qualities as Anne did, like courage and spunkiness. Charlotte is almost an orphan, on her own in Bandit Creek because her parents have gone west, but she doesn’t have the innocence of a child. She has to rely on the kindness of strangers. She has to make her own way and decide who she can trust and who she can’t.

Carla: Annie is a school teacher who became a fallen woman. Why did you choose to make her a teacher as well?

AJF: Annie’s story is a cautionary tale for a young woman in the early 1900′s. She was originally in the same situation as Charlotte, a young teacher on her own in Bandit Creek. But she made very different choices. She lived to regret her choices. We all know that young women, who are on their own, face risks. That’s as true today as it was in 1911. Charlotte, with her attitude, was just better prepared to deal with some of the risks she faced.

Carla: We don’t get to see very much of the character of Eileen McArthur who opens the book.

AJF: No, we don’t. She is the focus of the mystery and the only way we get to know her is by the way the other characters talk about her. Her story is tragic because her life ended so early.

Carla: Now who is Alec Forrest?

AJF:  Alec Forrest is the true orphan in the book. He witnessed the death of his parents. Now we’re back to the question of how being an orphan affects a person. It left a lot of scars and he copes by blocking everyone out. But he never has lost that basic sense of honor and decency that his parents taught him.

Carla: And the way I picture him, he’s very good looking in his lambskin jacket.

AJF: Honestly Carla, when I think of Alec, I think of Alex O’Loughlin who plays Steve McGarret on Hawaii Five-O – that striking dark, brooding appearance. A hero to die for.

Carla: And throughout the book, the tension grows on two levels…

AJF: Yes, the real mystery is what happened to Eileen McArthur and is someone out to get Charlotte, too. But the other theme of the story is will love triumph for these two characters who have been so hurt in the past.

Carla: Your book was quite a ride, Amy Jo. I could hardly put it down.

AJF: Thank you for saying that. The kind of story that I want to tell is a page-turner. I want the reader to be swept away to the world of Bandit Creek and then have the satisfaction of saying that’s the ending I was hoping for.

Carla: DEATH AT BANDIT CREEK is your first fiction to be published. You must be excited.

AJF: So excited. The group of Bandit Creek writers has been spectacular to work with. I feel so privileged to be part of this project. I just can’t tell you — I am so excited that my book is going to be published.

Carla: Thanks, Amy Jo and congratulations on your first publication.

Carla Interviews Steena Holmes about ‘Unknown’

Hi, I’m Carla Roma and welcome to Bandit Creek, a small town with a mountain of secrets. And this month has been a doozy. Go figure that it would take Steena Holmes to discover one of the beloved pastors of Bandit Creek had the biggest secret of all. But first – let me tell you how I met Steena. There’s this little chocolate shop in a beautiful town called Banff, Alberta. It’s off the main street but local gossip had it that it was quite possibly ‘the best chocolate’ you’ve ever tasted. So of course I had to check it out. When I walked into this shop, there was this woman wearing a gorgeous silver scarf at the counter. She was literally drooling over one of the displays. She picked up a sample piece of fudge and the look on her face was priceless. It was as if she’d been raptured. Did I just possibly meet my chocolate soul-mate?

Steena: Well of course you did! Was that not the best piece of chocolate you’ve ever tasted?

Carla: I’ll admit it. Yes it was. And that’s saying a lot since I’ve been to the chocolate factories in Switzerland and Germany. I’ll never forget the look on your face though–

Steena: Orgasmic. It’s still my favorite.

Carla: Okay, that made me laugh, considering you write erotic romance under a pen name. I have one question for you – is there chocolate in your Thriller “Unknown”?

Steena: Really, Carla…do you even need to ask that? My writing motto is “in the end, everything succumbs to chocolate”.

Carla: Forget I asked :) Okay, let’s talk about secrets.

Steena: I love secrets! Especially when they belong to someone else and I get to figure them out. Like Nathan Hanlin, ex-pastor of Faith Outreach. His secret is huge.

Carla: Here’s a question that I’m dying to know. Why do you emphasis that he’s an ex-pastor? Does that make a difference?

Steena: Sure does. Nathan is a man who gave up everything to serve God only to have his life literally fall a part. His idyllic marriage was about to end, he has major mother issues and then poof – his pregnant wife dies. He has every right to be angry at God. He actually says he doesn’t believe in God anymore.

Carla: I know that has to be significant for a reason. Care to share?

Steena: Remember that little café we met in when you asked me to write a Bandit Creek story?

Carla: The one with the chocolate scones? Oh wait … I see where you’re going with this. The Nephilim.

Steena: Exactly! Wasn’t that scone delicious? Yes, the Nephilim. This story is basically about a man whose world is about to get rocked. Big time.

Carla: But that’s not all that it’s about, is it?

Steena: Sure isn’t. There’s an old ancient myth that’s come to life, demons show up out of no where, demonic crows are talking out loud and one of the most loved characters may end up dead.

Carla: Dead? Oh Steena, did you have to go and kill one of my darlings?

Steena:  Sorry Carla. Nathan’s father (a fallen angel btw) has a plan and he’s not willing to let anyone get in the way of that. Even if it means he has to kill them. You’ll have to wait to see though – Nathan may just in be time to save a life. Who knows! Nathan’s story doesn’t end in Bandit Creek though. You can follow his journey of discovering his true identity beginning December in Nephilim Arise.

Carla: I’m still reeling that little tidbit you just revealed. Okay, so Devil Unknown is definitely a story for the history books of Bandit Creek. Make sure you pick up your copy today. Available on Amazon and Smashwords.

Carla Interviews Jade Buchanan About ‘Penny Candy’ & ‘Hard Candy’

Hi, I’m Carla Roma and welcome to Bandit Creek, a small town with a mountain of secrets. The first time I spotted Jade Buchanan I knew I’d met a fellow adventurer. We were on a cruise that went up the coast of Norway, and on the day we crossed paths we were both standing in the mud room of the ship, ready to jump into the arctic cold waters off one of the islands in Svalbard. We quickly bonded over our shared experience of freezing our butts off! Jade has traveled the world; she lived in the Sultanate of Oman in the Middle East, has ridden a camel in the desert, tangled with sea snakes, eaten miscellaneous meat in more places than she can remember, and walked barefoot through glacial waters at the top of a mountain. Today it is my pleasure to interview Jade Buchanan about her two books, PENNY CANDY and HARD CANDY, the third releases in the Bandit Creek series.

Carla: Before I get to your contributions to the Bandit Creek series, do you want to tell the story of our arctic swim, or should I?

Jade: I better tell it. You’ve been known to embelish a time or two—

Carla: Ha! And you would never do that!

Jade: Of course not. I’m sweet and innocent. Really. No one believes me for some reason, but regardless, the day we met was one of many firsts. I had gone to Norway on my own and I swore I would try to do as many things as I could. Nothing was going to be off limits because I didn’t want to look back and regret holding back. Jumping into arctic cold waters was a thrill I actually want to repeat. Especially since they delivered on their promise of a shot of vodka for those of us who jumped! I don’t know if my body has ever gone through a shock like that before, but I couldn’t breathe when I hit the water. My mind hadn’t completely turned off, though, since I did an automatic swimsuit check when I came back up.

Carla: That would have been quite the show if you’d lost your swimsuit!

Jade: There were cameras on us, I wasn’t about to risk it!

Carla: Like me, I know you’re a bit of a world traveler. Do you use that in your writing?

Jade: I use anything and everything in my writing. I’m famous in my family for saying “that’s going in a book” whenever we get together and start acting like fools. I find the world fascinating and I want to see as much of it as possible. It helps that my tastes are incredibly eclectic, so I want to experience everything. It’s one of the reasons I was excited to be part of this series. So many books, all within different genres and with varying heat levels. It’s like taking a vacation and getting to experience everything at once.

Carla: Right, the books! We should talk about PENNY CANDY and HARD CANDY. First off, two stories?

Jade: Call me crazy, but yes!

Carla: How does that work?

Jade: When we first talked about Bandit Creek, I knew I wanted to write a story about a woman returning to her hometown and the man she once loved. Only, every time I tried to determine what would happen next, one of the characters would make a decision that would throw me into confusion. I finally realized that was what I had to write about. Our decisions shape who we are, who we end up with and where we end up. So, I wanted to write a story – two stories – that would explore that theme. PENNY CANDY and HARD CANDY are the result. Two parallel stories, two very different endings.

Carla: What happens in the stories then?

Jade: In PENNY CANDY, we have our heroine Penny Anderson coming home for two reasons. First, she wants to find out what happened to her mother so many years ago. Penny’s mom died when she was in High School. Her father quickly shipped her off to Houston and she’s only now returning to Bandit Creek. But, she’s also recently reconnected with her High School sweetheart, and Candy Store owner, Craig Baxter. Craig wants to rekindle their romance and Penny isn’t sure what she wants.

Carla: So, how is HARD CANDY different?

Jade: They actually start off the same way. Penny is returning home for the same reasons as she is in PENNY CANDY. The difference is one very big, handsome, bisexual one. Back in school, Penny and Craig had a mutual friend named Douglas McKenzie. Mack has a secret… he’s in love with Craig and he’s infatuated with Penny. In HARD CANDY I explore the dynamic between the three of them.

Carla: Who makes the decision that changes the story from a twosome to a threesome?

Jade: They all do, actually. Our lives are interconnected, after all, so in order for two people to become three there needs to be the right timing where all three are open to that kind of a relationship. I’m not sure if I’ll ever explore this kind of a dynamic again of writing parallel stories, but I’m still fascinated by the idea that our choices and decisions shape so much of what we become. I know, such a serious thought for someone known for her quirky and outrageous stories!

Carla: Definitely intriguing! So, inquiring minds want to know, what’s up with the GI Joes?

Jade: LOL! I was told years ago by Laura Baumbach that it can be a good idea to use GI Joes to mock up sex scenes so I went out and bought a few to help me picture in my mind where everything was supposed to go. Then I made the mistake of naming them and my boys took on a life of their own! Today they’re quite the characters, and I’ve added many more friends to their little group ;) You can find out more about them on my website: http://www.jadebuchananbooks.com/freereads.htm

Carla:  I’ll definitely check it out! Thanks, Jade! You can find out more about Jade Buchanan at http://www.jadebuchananbooks.com. Her two stories, PENNY CANDY and HARD CANDY will be available from Amazon.com and Smashwords.com on October 15th, 2011. If you have questions or comments for me or for Jade, please leave a response and we’d be happy to reply!

Carla Interviews DL Snow about ‘Siren’s Song’

Hi, I’m Carla Roma and welcome to Bandit Creek, a small town with a mountain of secrets.  In all my travels I’ve found that the world is a paradox; both vast and diverse while somehow remaining surprisingly small.  A few years ago, I was on assignment in Japan where I was covering a story on the haunted forest at the base of Mount Fuji.  I ran across an English language newsletter and in the newsletter was a funny story by DL Snow.  Imagine my surprise to find DL and I hail from the same part of the world, although we didn’t meet until I returned to Canada.  Today, it is my pleasure to interview DL Snow about her book, SIREN’S SONG, the second story in the Bandit Creek series.

Carla:  Before we get to SIREN’S SONG, would you mind relaying the story I’d read about in the newsletter in Japan?

DL: My most embarrassing moment, you mean?

Carla:  That’s the one.

DL:  (sigh) Okay.  It was a beautiful day, the orange blossoms were in full bloom and I was riding my bike home for lunch from the high school in Wakayama prefecture where I taught English.  I was wearing a breezy, cotton skirt that day and was feeling rather romantic as it blew in the wind while I rode down main street…that is until the skirt got caught in the spokes of my bike and was torn completely from the waistband, leaving me…ahem…semi-naked.

Carla:  Oh dear!  What did you do?

DL:  Well, the wheels wouldn’t turn and the torn skirt had me trapped on the bike.  So, I picked up the bike and, with it stuck between my legs, waddled backwards off the street and up against a building hoping to hide the fact that I was clad only in my underwear.  Unfortunately, I had backed myself up against the glass window of a café.  Not pretty.  In an effort to get away from the window, I fell over.

Carla:  Did anyone help you?

DL:  (groan) Yes.  Some men were working on a building across the street and came running to my aid.  I yelled in English for them to go away and then yelled a few random Japanese words, “Mikan dai yo!”  Which means, ‘Big orange, I assure you.”

Carla:  So, how did you get out of it?

DL:  Honestly Carla, I don’t remember.  I think I’ve blocked the rest of the experience from my memory.  But, when I returned to school after lunch, teachers I barely knew came up to me asking if I was okay and why I’d changed.  Word travels fast in small town, Japan.

Carla: I love that story.  Can we talk about SIREN’S SONG now?

DL: Please!

Carla:  Joss Jones is the main character in SIREN’S SONG and she travels back in time.  Can you tell me about her?

DL:  I don’t know about you, but I think most people secretly – and often not-so-secretly – want to be famous.  Well, Joss Jones has been famous since she was a kid and now she’s convinced herself that all she wants is to be normal, so she moves to Bandit Creek.  There’s only one problem…

Carla: …Bandit Creek is anything but normal?

DL: Exactly!  From the moment she moves in, she’s being followed around by a ghost.  Then she’s sucked back in time to Bandit Creek, 1899.

Carla:  What happens when she arrives?

DL:  First of all she thinks she’s lost her mind.  Then she tries desperately to get back home.  Finally, she tries to figure out why she’s there.

Carla:  Why is she there?

DL:  I can’t tell you that, but I can tell you that Morgan Hawes is either the key to her finding her way back home or he’s the reason for her to stay.

Carla:  Who’s Morgan Hawes?

DL:  Morgan Hawes is the tall, dark mysterious man Joss believes is responsible for her being sucked back in time.  He has a habit of showing up at both the best and worst times and Joss thinks he’s another time traveler.  She’s pretty sure she’s supposed to help him get back home but he’s not very cooperative.

Carla:  You’ve written this story in first person.  Was that done for any specific reason?

DL:  Yes.  I felt first person fit this story best because I only wanted to show Joss’s point of view.  I wanted the reader to wonder, alongside Joss, whether Joss is simply crazy, half-dead and hallucinating or if she’s truly traveled through time.

Carla:  What was your inspiration for writing a time-travel?

DL:  Plenty!  One of my favorite romances as a young adult was A Knight in Shining Armor, by Jude Deveraux.  Then there’s The Terminator – loved the premise of that movie and in my opinion the first and second were by far the best.  Lately, I have been devouring Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series.  If you haven’t checked out these books, you must!

Carla:  What is your favorite scene from SIREN’S SONG?

DL:  I’d have to say that the last two scenes are my favorite (sorry, I know you only asked for one).  I still get chills when I read those scenes and I hope the reader will feel the same way!

Carla:  Thanks, DL.  Do you have any final words?

DL:  Yes, two things actually.  First of all, I want to thank Carla Roma for inviting me to join this wonderful group of Bandit Creek authors, I’m thrilled to be part of this project.  Secondly, I want to remind people to make sure to wear clean (and pretty) underwear whenever you leave the house…you never know when your skirt will rip off.

Carla:  Thanks for coming by today, DL.  You can find out more about DL Snow at www.dlsnow.ca.  Her book, SIREN’S SONG will be available from Amazon.com and Smashwords.com on October 1st, 2011. If you have questions or comments for me or for DL, please leave a response and we’d be happy to reply!

Carla Interviews Vivi Anna About ‘Lost’

Hi, I’m Carla Roma and welcome to Bandit Creek, a small town with a mountain of secrets. Picture this: I’m at some club that I can’t even remember the name of and there’s a woman in the middle of the room, laughing and talking.  She stands out partly because she’s sporting this wicked red hair but more because of her energy and presence.  Everyone wants to talk to her, including me.  That was the first time I met Vivi Anna. Then I read her Valorian Chronicles and I was blown away because these fabulous books bring together two of my very favorite things – vampires and forensics.  I love the juxtaposition of the myth with the science.  It was only a matter of time before Vivi and I decided to collaborate and together with a bunch of our friends, Bandit Creek was the inevitable outcome.

Today I am thrilled to talk to her about her book, LOST, the first in the Bandit Creek series.

Carla: Welcome Vivi. Thanks for joining me, I know how busy you’ve been lately what with all the film and TV projects you’re working on.

Vivi: For you Carla, anything. Well, just about anything.

Carla: Ha! Let’s start off by telling our readers how this Bandit Creek project came together.

Vivi: Well, it was magic really. One of those things that starts as a glimmer of an idea, then explodes into something spectacular by the sheer force of creativity of the people involved. I was talking about self-publishing and how one of the great things about is, that an author can work with any other author they wanted to. We were constricted by publishing houses or the ability to put an idea together that you could sell to one of the big publishers. I said that I could work with anyone I wanted, I could even collaborate with all of you. And that’s when it happened. I could see the spark in people’s eyes…and it went from there. It was one of my most amazing moments I’ve ever encountered.

Carla: Yup, it was. There was more creative energy in that room than I’ve ever experienced.

Carla: Okay, so now let’s talk about your book LOST. It’s the lead story, yes?

Vivi: Yes. We decided as a group that because of my experience with self-publishing and the fact that I am a fairly fast writer, that it would be best to put out my story first. To set the stage sort of speak.

Carla: LOST is a bit of a departure for you, isn’t it? There isn’t a vampire, lycan, fae, or demon in sight.

Vivi: Yeah, LOST ended up being a mystery with a bit of paranormal. My lead protagonist has psychic abilities.

Carla: She can communicate with the dead, right?

Vivi: Not communicate per se, she can hear them. But she can’t necessarily speak to them. She’s not a medium. She also has the ability to find missing things, or things that are hiding. She uses these abilities to find missing people, and/or the dead.

Carla: I get chills just thinking about it. Can you tell us a little more about Kirsten Morgan? Why hasn’t she been back to Bandit Creek, her childhood home, in so long?

Vivi: Because of her father, the Sheriff. He’s never really believed in her abilities. She thinks he blames her for the missing Baker boy fiasco. And blames her for her mother’s death.

Carla: Oh, I have to know about Mr. Tall, Dark and Gorgeous, Adam Medicine Crow.

Vivi: Adam is one of those men who you can’t not like. He’s charming, sexy, and loves being the protector. He’d just as easily help an elderly woman across the street with her shopping bags, and flirt with her at the same time, making her feel like the most beautiful woman in the world. He and Kirsten have history. Let’s leave it at that.

Carla: One thing I thought was special about this series was that it is a mixture of genres. Not just paranormal, or mysteries, or erotic romances, but a mixture of everything.

Vivi: Yes we decided as a group to experiment with that. We didn’t want to be limiting to our authors. Some authors write mainly historicals, others like YA. So we thought why not just open it up and allow the author to explore whatever type of story they wanted to write. Some of the stories are romances, others are not. Some are spicy, others have no sex in them at all. But we did make sure that we’ve labeled them as such, so the reader knows what they are buying.

Carla: That’s fantastic. Is there anything else you’d like to share before I let you go and actually do some work?

Vivi: I’d just like to say, I hope that readers will enjoy this series. That there will be something for everyone. And because of the low prices, I hope that readers will try something new. Thanks.

Carla: Thank you Vivi for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk with me today about this exciting new series.
